Please include the amount of time you spend in each of these three sessions, and clearly mark the 3 different sessions. A half hour in each session is a good start. We will be focusing our attention on Psa 51:1-12. This is a passage David wrote after his well-known adulterous affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. This is a longer passage, so focus on the descriptions and results of sin in David's life.

The instructions are simple:

  1. First Reading (Please note time spent): What words or phrases surface for you? Try to remain open to God's Spirit's voice and leading.
    1. Listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit. It will not be audible but insights and impressions may come to your consciousness.
    2. Silent Reflection
    3. Record in section 1, what words/phrases stood out.
    4. Pray to the Lord that He help you live your life in light of the truth you have discovered. Record your prayer in your journal.
  2. Second Reading (Please note time spent): Ask God to help you discern (interpret) why these words/phrases arose for you from the passage at this particular time. Record what you "discovered."
    1. Listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit. It will not be audible but insights and impressions may come to your consciousness.
    2. Silent Reflection
    3. Record in section 2 your idea of why these words/phrases stood out (with no comment from others).
    4. Pray to the Lord that He help you live your life in light of the truth you have discovered. Record your prayer in your journal.
  3. Third Reading (Please note time spent): Opening yourself again to God's Spirit, notice if any images, pictures, or metaphors surface in relation to what you've heard through the passage. Do any people, "places," or sensory experiences (light, color, smells, sounds, or emotions) float into your consciousness?
    1. Listen
    2. Silent Reflection
    3. Report anything you discovered.
    4. Pray to the Lord that He help you live your life in light of the truth you have discovered. Record your prayer in your journal.
