Reaction Paper Guidelines and Rubric

 

Each reaction will be based off of one of the podcasts or videos listed below.

 

Your paper must be typed, single-spaced, one to two pages in length, one-inch margins, and written in 12-point

 

font (Times New Roman or something similar).

 

Your paper should demonstrate that you have 1) understood the material and, 2) made connections between the

 

podcast and other class material (such as the textbook or class lectures).

 

The primary goal of these papers is to encourage you to think deeply about the assigned materials. Your papers

 

should not consist of a list of scattered thoughts. Your paper should be an organized summary of your reaction to

 

the material.

 

In order to receive full points, be sure to follow the instructions below carefully.

 

Assignment Details: Please read BEFORE you listen to the podcast. 1. Prior to listening to the podcast, on a piece of paper, jot down a few things you already know about the

 

topic the podcast is about. 2. Next, listen to the podcast and make notes about the topics that are addressed on your piece of paper.

 

Once the podcast is finished, you should be able to summarize the podcast based off of your notes. 3. While listening to the podcast, make notes about your reaction(s) to the program. If you feel ?stuck? and

 

don?t know how to evaluate your reactions, consider the following questions:

 

o Did the program change your understanding of the topic? If so, what

 

changed? o Did the program provoke new questions about the topic? What are these

 

questions? o Was the information presented in the program consistent (or inconsistent)

 

with your understanding of the topic? What was the most surprising thing you

 

learned? o How can the information from the program be applied to your own life? o (You DO NOT have to answer all of these questions?they are provided as prompts to aid you in

 

the writing process.) 4. Find information in the book or in one of the class lectures that relates to the material in the podcast or

 

video. This information can either support or challenge the information presented in the podcast. 5. Write your reaction paper. Your reaction paper should consist of:

 

o one to two paragraphs that summarize your thoughts about the topic prior to listening to the

 

program. o one to two paragraphs that describe the topics addressed in the program from beginning, middle,

 

and end (this serves as proof that you actually listened to the whole program). o At least two paragraphs that relate the information to class material (either lectures or the book).

 

Cite the book pages and lectures referenced (does NOT have to be in APA format) o two to three paragraphs that convey your reaction to the program. You can structure the ?reaction? part of your paper any way you like, and can focus on whatever is interesting to you. However, you should NOT present simply a list of scattered thoughts. Clarity and organization are important. Additionally, your reaction should be about the content of the podcast, rather than irrelevant details (ex. speaking style, length, sound, etc.). Social Psychology ? Fall 2016 1 Reaction paper due dates are listed on the syllabus. Reaction papers can be completed anytime throughout the

 

semester as long as it?s before the due date. In other words, you could complete both reaction papers within the

 

first week of class if you felt ambitious. Because this is an online course, you will have to wait until the week the reaction paper is due to submit it.

 

Reaction papers will be worth 50 points. They will be graded using this grading rubric:

 

Previous knowledge and understanding · Writes at least 1 paragraph discussing previous understanding of the podcast topic 10 pts Summary · Writes 1 to 2 paragraphs summarizing the podcast or video · Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the material · Makes it clear that the writer listened to the beginning, middle, and end of the podcast or

 

video 10 pts Relation to book or lecture material · At least 2 paragraphs linking the podcast or video information back to book or lecture mate- 10 pts

 

rial · Cites the book or lecture material they referenced (does not have to be in APA format) Reaction · Writes 1 to 2 paragraphs discussing reaction to the podcast or video · Reactions are about podcast or video content, rather than speaking style, podcast length, or

 

other extraneous details 10 pts Grammar and writing ability · Paper is coherent and easy to read · Paper reads smoothly with appropriate transitions between ideas · Paper could be understood by someone who has never taken a social psychology course or

 

who is unfamiliar with the topics discussed · Writing is clear without vagueness or ambiguity · Writing holds the reader?s attention · Avoids hyperbolic statements · Writing is free of spelling or mechanics errors 10 pts Listed below are the different podcasts you can use to complete this assignment. You are allowed to choose any

 

podcast you are most interested in to complete each reaction paper, however, you must choose DIFFERENT podcasts for each of the paper assignments.

 

If you have taken one of my other classes (ex. evolutionary psychology or human sexuality), you might notice that

 

some of the video options below were also used in that class. Social psychology is so closely related to every other

 

field in psychology, that there is a lot of overlap. If you have already completed a paper on one of the options be- Social Psychology ? Fall 2016 2 low for one of my other classes, please do not reuse that paper for this class. Doing so will result in a failing grade

 

on that paper. Choose another podcast option to complete your current paper.

 

Make sure to clearly label your paper with the title of the podcast or video you are writing about.
